The Threshold Project
Building the West End Extension

Gavin's Story

Gavin Knight
"After moving into the parish four years ago I quickly understood that the church needed to open its doors to create a better welcome for everybody.

This would become the main objective for the Threshold Project."

When I first came to St Michael's in 2011, I remember peering through the glass door at the west end of the church and a sense of excitement ran through me.

If I were able to cross the threshold I would be able to experience this beautiful, sacred space. Something wonderful could be achieved here! In my mind, the threshold became the key to the church's future.

If we became dedicated to welcoming others, to allow light and life over the threshold, the church's potential could become realized. I soon came to understand that the church was being asked to enter into a 'threshold ministry'.

The plans for the new extension incorporate a transparent vista, no longer obscuring the activity within.

The new building will speak for us, that we have something to celebrate in our faith and community life. We want the threshold to be crossed by people coming in and people going out.

The Threshold seemed to be an apt name for this new extension, it has a purpose and a mission - reaching out to the people of the community offering healing and wholeness.
