Mental Health & Pastoral Care

Exploring Faith Study Course: Mental Health and Healing in the Pastoral Care of the Church

Gavin and Jo Knight explore issues of mental health and healing in the pastoral care of the Church via their joint perspectives of priest and psychologist.

In particular, they consider how church worship and liturgy can connect with psychological thinking. The importance of story-telling and story-listening is central to their shared approach.

The course aims:
to promote a greater understanding of mental health issues;
to promote the Eucharist as a healing service;
to provide a safe environment for the discussion of pastoral care in our churches.

Before becoming vicar at St Michael's last year, Gavin was the Chaplain at Monmouth School. His wife Jo is a clinical psychologist who specialises in working with children and young people. Her training background includes adult and older adult mental health. Since qualifying she has worked in both Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) and with children with special needs. Jo currently works in Oxford across two specialities.
