The Centre was "mentioned in despatches" by our local MP, Layla Moran, and recorded in Hansard (Parliamentary Debates) 1st March 2023. Layla wrote a note accompanying the Hansard script:
"Dear Gavin and the whole team at St Michael & All Angels Church, thank you for all you do for our community, and especially for our Ukrainian refugees. It is noticed and appreciated."
The House of Commons debate 'Homes for Ukraine Scheme Anniversary' was held on 1st March 2023. Layla spoke to the chamber saying,
"I also thank the community groups and volunteers who have provided huge support and help for guests and hosts. St Michael & All Angels in Summertown run a Ukrainian friendship centre every Wednesday, which I was lucky enough to visit. It provides English classes and children's activities. Hubs have been set up with citizens advice and the council to provide a one-stop shop and a co-ordinated place with translators, so that a Ukrainian family in need of help knows where to go and has one place to go and get it."
We need more hosts to accommodate the displaced people of Ukraine, the war is far from over. Those who arrived in the UK last year will also be needing different places to live.
