St Michael's is an Eco Church
Background
We got started on our Eco Church journey when our nearest registered Eco church, Holy Trinity in Headington Quarry, gave a talk to the Social Justice group and also at a special Eco Sunday service.
The Eco church scheme gave us a framework for each to play a part in whatever way we were able. 15 people in our congregation committed themselves to the scheme and we were on the way …
Since then the Eco Church has been working on the church gardens, planting a "Bible Garden", fitting swift boxes, creating bug hotels, planting trees, herbs, flowers and hedges. We have also been involved in organising the Climate Justice Campaign as well as the Eco Fair on Climate Change.
Eco Theology
We are driven by a strong theological focus which carries a prophetic message about care for God's creation and the consequences of not paying heed to creation's song. We will attempt to express, through worship and teaching, something of the "amazement" of creation, its beauty and wonder.
We will also focus on the call for better stewardship of creation, how selfishness and abuse of this fragile jewel is threatening the existence of natural resource, plant and animal diversity and, ultimately, human life.
We have developed a new liturgical season, that of Creationtide, from 1st September to the Feast of St Francis – 4th October.
